Tree spade capacity depends on blade diameter and configuration. Most skid steer tree spades handle trees with trunk calipers between 1 to 4 inches and root balls up to 24 to 44 inches wide. Match spade size to your typical transplant requirements.

Late fall through early spring provides optimal transplanting conditions when trees are dormant. Cool temperatures and moist soil reduce transplant shock and allow roots to establish before summer heat. Avoid transplanting during active growth periods or extreme weather.

Tree spade cutting depth varies by model, typically ranging from 18 to 36 inches. Blade depth should capture the majority of feeder roots while creating a manageable root ball size. Deeper cuts preserve more roots but require larger equipment and create heavier loads.

Four-blade tree spades create round root balls ideal for most ornamental and deciduous trees. Three-blade designs produce cone-shaped root balls that work well in tight spaces and require less digging force. Choose based on tree species and planting hole requirements.

Dig the receiving hole slightly wider and equal depth to the root ball before extraction. Loose soil around the edges encourages root growth. Water the hole beforehand and backfill with native soil immediately after placement to prevent root ball drying.
